The invention relates to a method for assembling a chain as described in the preamble of claim 1.

Such a method is known from GB 331093A. According to this known method the stepwise moving support, as used therein, is provided at one edge thereof, which cooperates with an upright stationary shroudplate , with a number of notches to act as a temporary support for the respective entities ( which are, here, one-piece pins ) when the links are placed thereon by an assembling device. The finished chain leaves the assembling device in a direction tangential to this support.

This method calls for complicated machinery to carry it out and is not suited to obtain complete chains which are, after their assembling has been completed and they are removed from the support, already closed in themselves and need no further handling for interconnecting the ends thereof. This known method is thus not suited to assemble closed chains of the type as known from, for instance, EP 0741255 in which the respective entities are not interconnected by just two links, but by a greater number of links in an intricate pattern. Particularly the interconnecting of the free ends of a section of such a chain is very difficult, if not impossible to achieve by means of this known method.

The invention aims to improve this known method in such a way that the assembling of a chain, closed in itself and particularly with a complicated pattern of multiple links becomes easily possible, either manually or automated.

The method with which this is achieved is defined in the characterizing part of claim 1.

Further preferred embodiments of the method according to the invention are described in claims 2 and 3.

Using the method described above a complete chain even with a complicated pattern of multiple links is made in one cycle consisting of a number of simple assembling steps. The number of specialized tools necessary for carrying out this method is minimal whereas, when the method is executed in the way as proposed in claim 2, the advantage is obtained that the links have only to be shifted over a limited length of the elements (for example, not greater than half the value of this length).

When the method is carried out in the way as defined in claim 3 the advantage is obtained that, in the completed chain, the ends of the shorter elements will already all lie at practically the same, prescribed, distance from the ends of the longer elements.

The claimed exclusive rights include a device for carrying out the method as described above and as defined in claim 4, while a preferred embodiment thereof is described in claim 5.

The method and the device according to the invention will be elucidated below by means of the figures. Therein shows:

  • Figure 1 a perspective view from above of the device according to the invention;

Figure 1 shows a complete device for assembling a transmission chain using the method according to the invention. This device, indicated in its entirety by the number 2, consists of the base 4 from which the spindle 6 protrudes. An assembling plate 8 and a closing plate 10, shown in detail in Figure 2, can rotate about the spindle. Furthermore, the device 2 comprises the upright column 12 along which an arm 16 is guided that can be moved up and down by means of a simple mechanism, driven by the operating lever 18 in the direction of the arrows 20. There is a gripper head 22 situated on the free end of the arm 16 with jaws 24 with which a link plate can be pressed onto an entity of the elongated chain elements. As the figures show, near the outer periphery 8a of the assembling plate (which indeed could also be an assembling ring) there is a ring of axial openings 30 for inserting those entities situated between the plate's raised outer edge 32 and a raised inner edge 34. Each of these openings has a configuration which corresponds to the outer contour of an entity of two elongated elements of the transmission chain to be assembled, each with their long sides lying against each other, as elucidated in detail by means of Figures 3 and 4. The upper surface 10a of the closing plate 10 to be placed under the assembling plate 8 is provided with a number of radial, shallow, recesses the width of which corresponds to the thickness of the longest elongated elements.

As Figure 3 shows, firstly the closing plate 10 and then the assembly plate 8 is placed round the spindle 6 and in such a position with regard to each other that the recessed grooves 36 in the closing plate 10 lie under the holes 30 in which the longest of the elements are inserted. This can, of course, be realized in a simple manner. Because the method and set-up according to the invention are intended in particular for assembling a transmission chain of the type described in the European patent EP 0741255 and the American patent US 5728021 respectively, both in the name of the applicant, a set of elongated transmission elements, indicated in Figures 3 and 4 by the number 40, will consist of a long pin 42 and a little shorter roll-off strip 44; in use, the longer pins 42 are in contact with the tapered cone pulleys and realize the transmission of power to the link plates, a few of which are shown in detail in Figure 4 and are indicated by the numeral 46. Always the combination of a pin 42 and a strip 44 is placed in a take-up opening 30, where the pin 42 will come to lie a little lower than the strip because the end of the pin will fit into the radial recess 36. Figure 3 shows the situation in which all the sets of pins and strips have been placed in the assembling plate and Figure 4 shows the start of the phase wherein the link plates 46 are being placed on the pins and strips. This takes place in accordance with the pattern desired and can easily be done manually or be carried out mechanically. In the embodiment shown, the link plates are pressed onto the sets of pins and strips by the jaws 24 during the downward movement of the lever 18. Figure 5 shows the situation in which the transmission chain is halfway assembled; the upper part of each set of pins and strips is coupled to the adjoining set by a link plate.

The subassembly 50 obtained in this way is now detached from the assembly plate 8, turned over and again put on the assembling plate 8: this is the situation in Figure 6. The purpose of the raised edges at the periphery 32 and 34 respectively is now also apparent; they enclose in between them the protruding ends of the pins and strips protruding from the entity of links 50 which has already been made, as a result of which the entity remains in position. Figure 7 shows how the first link plates 46 will complete the subassembly which has already been made and finally Figure 8 shows the finished transmission chain 54.

Figure 4 in particular shows a favourable detail of the configuration of pins and strips respectively and particularly the bevel 56 and 58 respectively on the head-end which makes it easier to place the link plates over the sets of pins and strips, especially when the pins and strips are coupled to the link plates with a light drive press-fit.

Verfahren zum Zusammenbauen einer Getriebekette (54) mit länglichen Einheiten (42, 44: 56, 58), die jeweils in Paaren gekoppelt sind mittels Kettengliedern (46), die mit Öffnungen, in welche diese Einheiten aufgenommen werden können, versehen sind, in welchem Verfahren diese länglichen Einheiten über einen Teil ihrer Länge und gegenseitig parallel in einer Anzahl von Aufnahmepositionen auf einem Träger (8) getragen werden, und gegenseitig gekoppelt werden, indem die Kettenglieder über eine gewünschte Länge auf die Teile dieser Einheiten, welche aus der Oberfläche der Unterstützung herausragen, aufgesetzt werden, worauf die also erhaltene Anordnung von der Unterstützung entfernt wird, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass zum Zusammenbauen einer in sich geschlossenen Getriebekette (54), deren jeweilige Einheiten zwei längliche, mit ihren langen Seiten aneinander liegende Elemente (42, 44 ; 56, 58) umfassen, diese Aufnahmepositionen in einem geschlossenen Kreis angeordnet sind, wobei jede dieser Positionen von einer Bohrung (30) in der Unterstützung (8) bestimmt wird, deren Bohrungswand die zwei länglichen Elemente umschließt, während die Elemente, die gegenseitig durch die hierauf angeordneten Kettenglieder verbunden sind, aus dieser Unterstützung gelöst werden in eine parallel mit der longitudinalen Orientierung der Elemente verlaufende Richtung. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass in einem ersten Schritt nur ein Teil der Elemente mit Kettengliedern versehen wird, in einem darauf folgenden Schritt die in dieser Weise erhaltene Anordnung (50) umgedreht wird und die restlichen Kettenglieder dem gewünschten Muster entsprechend auf die restlichen freien Teile der länglichen Elemente (5, 6) platziert werden. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 oder 2 zum Zusammenbauen einer Kette, in der in jeder länglichen Einheit eines der länglichen Elemente (44; 58) jeweils kürzer als das andere (42, 56) ist und wobei das längere (42, 56) dieser zwei Elemente auf einem Niveau (36) liegt, das unter dem Niveau, auf dem das kürzere Element unterstützt wird, liegt. Vorrichtung (2) zum Ausführen des Verfahrens gemäß Anspruch 3, gekennzeichnet durch einen unterstützenden Montagekörper (8) mit einem in diesem geformten, der Abmessung der zusammenzubauenden Kette entsprechenden geschlossenen Kranz von Aufnahmeöffnungen (30), wobei jede Aufnahmeöffnung einen Querschnitt aufweist, der an die Konfiguration der Kombination von zwei nebeneinander liegenden länglichen Elementen (42, 44; 56, 58) angepasst ist, und eine geringere Tiefe als die Länge dieser länglichen Elemente besitzt, wobei jede Bohrung an der Oberseite von zwei in radialem Abstand zueinander liegenden Erhöhungen (32, 34) begrenzt wird, und an der Unterseite durch einen stufenförmigen Anschlag (36) in solcher Weise abgeschlossen wird, dass jedes längere Element über einen längeren Abstand als das kürzere Element in eine Öffnung aufgenommen wird. Vorrichtung nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die stufenförmigen Anschläge (36) eingeformt sind in eine separate, an den Boden des Körpers (8) anschießende Platte mit jeweiligen Aufnahmeöffnungen, in die die Elemente eingeführt werden.
Method of assembling a transmission chain (54) comprising elongated entities (42, 44; 56, 58), coupled to each other in pairs by means of link plates (46) provided with openings for accommodating said entities, in which method these elongated entities are supported over a part of their length and parallel to each other in a number of registering positions on a support (8), and are coupled together by placing link plates (46) along a desired lenght on the parts of said elongated entities protruding from the surface of the support and the assembly thus obtained is thereafter detached from said support,

characterized in that

for assembling a transmission chain (54) which is closed in itself and of which each of said entities comprises two elongated elements (42, 44; 56, 58) lying with their long sides against each other, said registering positions are ranged in a closed circle, each of said positions being defined by a hole (30) in the support (8), of which hole the wall encloses said two elongated elements, while the elements, interconnected by the link plates thereon, are detached from this support in a direction parallel to the longitudinal orientation of the elements.
Method according to claim 1, characterized in that in a first step only part of the length of the elements are provide with links, and in a subsequent step the thus obtained assembly (50) is turned over and the remaining link plates are placed in accordance with the desired pattern on the remaining free parts of the longitudinal elements (fig. 5, 6). Method according to one of the claims 1 or 2 for assembling a chain where in each elongated entity one of the elongated elements (44; 58) is always shorter than the other (42, 56), and the longest (42, 56) of these two elements is supported at a level (36) that lies below the level at which the shortest element is supported. Device (2) for carrying out the method according to claim 3 characterized by a supporting assembling body (8) with a closed ring of holes (30) in it corresponding to the measurements of the chain to be assembled, each hole (30) having a cross-section adapted to the configuration of the combination of two elongated elements (42, 44; 56, 58) lying next to each other, and having a depth less than the length of said elongated elements in which each hole is bounded on the top side by two raised edges (32, 34) situated radially at a distance from each other and on the bottom side is closed off by a stepped recess (36), in such a way that each longest element is insertable in a hole over a distance greater than same of the shorter element. Device according to claim 4, characterized in that the stepped recesses (36) are made in a separate plate (10) which abuts to the bottom side of the body (8) comprising the respective holes (30) for inserting the elements.
Procédé pour l'assemblage d'une chaîne de transmission (54), comprenant des ensembles de forme allongée (42, 44; 56, 58), couplés entre eux par paires au moyen de maillons (46) pourvus d'ouvertures permettant de recevoir les ensembles en question, procédé dans lequel ces ensembles de forme allongée sont supportés parallèlement les uns par rapport aux autres, sur une partie de leur longueur, dans un certain nombre de positions réceptrices sur un support (8) et sont reliés réciproquement par placement, à une longueur souhaitée, de maillons sur les parties de ces ensembles faisant saillie par rapport à la surface du support, après quoi l'ensemble ainsi obtenu est dégagé du support, le procédé étant caractérisé en ceci que, pour l'assemblage d'une chaîne de transmission (54) fermée sur elle-même, dont chacun des ensembles comprend deux éléments de forme allongée (42, 44; 56, 58), lesquels sont positionnés les uns contre les autres par leur côté long, ces positions réceptrices sont ordonnées en cercle fermé, dans lequel chacune des positions est déterminée par une perforation (30) dans le support (8), la paroi de la perforation cemant les deux éléments de forme allongée, tandis que les éléments, reliés entre eux par les maillons mis en place, sont dégagés du support dans une direction parallèle à l'orientation longitudinale des éléments. Procédé selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ceci que, dans une première étape, l'ensemble ainsi obtenu (50) est retourné et les maillons restant sont placés, en conformité avec le patron souhaité, sur les parties libres restantes des éléments de forme allongée (5, 6). Procédé selon l'une des revendications 1 ou 2 pour l'assemblage d'une chaîne dans laquelle, dans chacun des ensembles de forme allongée, l'un des éléments de forme allongé (44,58) est toujours plus court que l'autre (42, 56) et le plus long (42, 56) de ces deux éléments est soutenu à un niveau (36) situé au-dessous du niveau auquel l'élément le plus court se trouve soutenu. Dispositif (2) pour la mise en oeuvre du procédé selon la revendication 3, caractérisé par un corps de montage (8) ayant fonction de support, avec, dans ce dernier, coïncidant avec la dimension de la chaîne à assembler, une couronne fermée d'ouvertures réceptrices (30), dans laquelle chaque ouverture réceptrice a une section adaptée à la configuration de la combinaison de deux éléments de forme allongée (42, 44; 56, 58) placés l'un à côté de l'autre et a une profondeur plus petite que la longueur de ces éléments de forme allongée, par quoi, chaque perforation est, sur le dessus, bordée par deux rehaussements (32, 34) à distance radiale l'un de l'autre, et est, sur le dessous, fermée par une butée étagée (36), de telle sorte que chaque élément le plus long s'intègre sur une longueur plus grande dans l'ouverture que ne le fait l'élément le plus court. Dispositif selon la revendication 4, caractérisé en ce que les butées étagées (36) sont formées sur une plaque séparée (10) qui s'adapte sur fond du corps (8) avec les ouvertures de réception respectives où viennent s'insérer les éléments.
